I have a number of users that are using Win ME & W2K to access a WNT4.0 file server.
At present users print to three printers via (dodgy) IP ports.
I would like to configure the printers as physical printers on the NT4.0 server using the IP addresses of the printers.
How do you go about adding IP based printers to an NT4.0 server??
When I select the port type of the printer I want to install there is no option for TCP/IP???
Thanks

This is going back a long way, so I hope I am not pointing you in the wrong direction, but when we had an NT network I had the same problem.

We use HP printers and I had to install JetAdmin on the server to make TCP/IP available.

You need to install TCP/IP Printing. It is a component of the Network setup. Go to Control Panel, Network and then Services. Click the Add button and you'll be away.

Ok,
I have now added the TCP/IP Printing service to the NT 4.0 server.
Having added the service what is the next step?
I noticed that the LPR port was added to the server but I cannot seem to add and install a printer on the server and configure it / allocate it an IP Address?
Any ideas?
Thanks

When you Add Port and select LPR port, it will give you a dialog with two boxes. The first should contain the printer (or print server's) IP address. The second field needs to be the port name (because some print servers have multiple ports). Depending on the type of printer (or print server) you're using, this may not matter what it is (I use 'P1'), or it may be crucially important. Consult the setup for the printer (or print server) on how to configure the IP address and port name. That should work. I use that setup here.

Right, I have tried your instructions but am still struggling somewhat???
The printer I am attempting to connect to is connected to the network using a HP Jet Direct 170cx print server.
The print server has been allocated a static IP address of 10.*.*.19 (I have removed some of the details purposely). The name of the server is DATASTORE1.
When configuring / adding the port what do I specify in the field entitled

Name or address of server providing lpd??
and
Name of printer or print queue on that server?

Thanks

Its ok. I have now sorted the problem. Thanks for your advice.
