Hi

I am expecting an AIX Consultant on site for half day and I wonder what is the normaly procedures involved when the consultant is on site. This is the first experience I will be having an aix consultant on site so it is pretty new experience for me and it would be nice to pick up knowledge and experiences from someone more experienced than myself.

I would really appreciate if any of you share some thoughts with me - my main issue is how to maximise the overall performance on the server (with oracle app and database running on it).

Thanking you all in advance.

Regards

Katherine

Hello KOG,
What is the nature of the consultancy is this? A new server setup, security audit, performance tuning, etc...?

Hi WiccaChic

Well the new server is already set up, and I have installed Oracle 9i so the main issues I would like the consultant to cover are performance and tuning.

Cheers

Consultants are usually very experienced. He knows what to do so take the opportunity to ask a lot of questions and watch him work.

Well this aix "consultant" came here few days ago and removed the faulty disk from pSeries without checking if it is a mirror copy of the rootvg !

I have requested for another aix consultant so wanted to list all the task before he comes on site and make sure we follow the tasks/procedures.

well.. before the consultant does anything at all in your environment ask him for a written procedure of what he intends to do and post it here (if you wish)

If for performance tuning you are after there is a very good pdf you can read. AIX 5L Cert Guide Performance & System Tuning pdf file you can research it through the ibm.redbooks.com site.

Normally this is procedure for performance tuning -- Planning/consulting/testing/more planning > then acutal implementation

1. The consultant should asked what you want to tuned and monitor
2. gathering info/details/statistics (Base lining give at least few days - for me a week)
3. Consultant will provide you the results of step 1 & 2, then provide suggestion/recommendations. As this is serious stuff they should not do anything on you system without consulting you.

for performance & tuning -- these are general overview (which you can read on the pdf above).
a. CPU
b. Memory
c. I/O
d. Network
You have commands you can use to identify the 'bottlenecks' then you have set of commands to do tuning.
