Go to network connections, right click on the internet connection you want to have connection status, select properties, on the General tab check the "Show icon in notification area when connected" option. (at the bottom of the dialog box)
This will put the 2 computer icon in the tray. double click the icon to see status. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.
You run the "New connection wizard" from network connections. You can't import, you need to create a new one. The two rules for success are:

Thanks again.
I go through the New Connections Wizard procedure, but no connections show up in my Network Connections folder. When I repeated the procedure, I received message that a connection with the ISP name I was using already existed in the folder, but it doesn't show up - i.e. the folder is apparently empty.

Correction.
I have found the relevant connection under network connections, even though it doesn't show up in the folder, and I have clicked on 'show icon when connected', but still no icon shows up in taskbar.
Are you connected through that connection? You have to be connected for the icon to show up in the area to the right near the clock (this is know as the notification area)
If you want a shortcut in the "launch" area of the taskbar (far left) than you need to copy a shortcut from the network connections window to the "launch" area.
Hope this makes sense. If not repost.

Dear rj
Thanks again for your help. I am still stuck with this. I seem to have a general problem with my network connection setup; it is not functioning as xp leads me to expect. E.g., under Control Panel, I find 'Network Connections' rather then 'Internet and network connections'. Then, as I said before, 'network connections' is 'empty', when i open that folder, there's nothing in it. i can't run the network connection wizard - nothing happens. Sometimes I get a message asking me if Network Services are enabled, but I don't know how to enable them.
All the help files direct me to perform operations on items within the network connections folder, so I am stuck. I have checked my XP setup and all the network components are apparently installed.
Any thoughts?

Look for "Network Connections" and "Network Location Awareness". Both should be Started, if not Start them.
As to why they would not be started the only thing that comes to mind is that your modem or NIC card installation has problems.
You said you ran the wizard, where did you run it from if the network connections window is empty? The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.
Network Connection Services and Network Location Awareness are now both started, and I have set them to start automatically, but I receive a message saying, 'The network Connections Folder was unable to retrieve the list of Network adaptors on your machine. Please make sure that the Network Connections Service is enabled and running.'
The Network Connections folder is still empty.
Just a guess, but I'd say either you have a driver problem for the Modem or the BIOS needs to be updated for WinXP.
If this has been like this from the begining, since upgrade to XP, then those are likely canidates. BIOS being most likely. The two rules for success are:
1. Never tell them everything you know.
The ISP is Onetelnet - no fumky dialer and it works ok.
It IS an upgrade from ME
I haven't reinstalled the connection.
(I can't find any relevant BIOS or driver upgrades.)
