This week I noticed that several tasks had not run in a long time and when I went to open my scheduled tasks the icon was missing and replced with the ubiquitous "lost icon". When I right clicked on the icon and asked for properties then location it pointed to explorer.exe. I was expecting mstask.dll or something similar. Where did the scheduler go?
How do I get my scheduler back?

Which Icon is missing, the Add Scheduled Task, or all your actual Task Icons? Does anything show up if you unhide tasks via the Advanced menu?

Is the Task Scheduler Service starting and running?

Any clues contained in the log file (Schedlgu.txt), or in the Event Viewer?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

linney,

In the Control Panel the Scheduled Tasks icon is goofed up and the assigned tasks will not expand. (I have the control Panel set up as a menu.) When the pointer is moved over the icon instead of the list expanding I get a system beep. When I click on the icon in System Tools nothing happens.

Yes, the service is running along with its dependency service RPC.

No errors in the Schedlgu.txt other than the one that prompted me to open the Task Scheduler in the first place. I changed my system password and needed to do so on a task for it to run.

Ran the chkdsk /f option and no problems there either.

I will have to bring my CD from work and try the last item. I'll let you know what transpires. I REALLY do not want to reinstall the OS.
Cheers

Linney,

Thanks for the help, I now have some more knowledge to store in cocoanut. It was the system file check that did the trick.

Blessings,
