For example...when i go to start menu, then programs, then accessories......a few of the programs when clicked on are opening other programs. When I click on the calculator, the control panel opens up. When I click on wordpad, compression agent starts to run. There are a few others as well. When I right click on the problem programs and go to properties, the 'target' field has been changed. What has caused this? Virus? Any help would be appreciated....

Virus sounds most likely, I have never known this to happen spontaneously. Its not somebody playing tricks on you is it? it would be very easy and quick to do if someone had access to the computer.... If not I suggest a full virus scan, you can do a free online one at
Help us to help you, please post back and tell us if this helped.
All things are possible except skiing through a revolving door.

Ok, I did the virus scan and the following...

A file named PAV.SIG is infected with a virus named Trivial.Family...

I didn't see to much on the internet about this virus....anyone have any information on it? Should i just delete this pav.sig file?

Strange thing happened....I ran another virus scan using a free Panda download and a scan using the 'housecall' link above. They both showed no viruses on my computer. The Virus scan that told me that I had a virus on my comp was from the symantech website. So maybe symantech shares the same problem Norton does with this one file......

I still have the original problem though and have no clue how it happened.....no one has access to my comp to play such a trick....

The Norton AV products seem to be having real problems of late, in detection and knackering systems on uninstall.

Interesting that you say that...I had Norton 2000 installed on my computer till I realized it was doing something to the clock on my computer. I uninstalled Norton and the clock went back to normal, but then this other problem with the file traget started happening. I wonder if uninstalling Norton is the cause of my problems.........

Just to let you all know what I did to fix my issue. I simply went to the 'Windows Setup' dialoge box and uninstalled, and then re-installed, system tools, multimedia, and accessories. All is good now. But I have no clue how this happened in the first place....
