i just read in my NTP that systems WITHOUT BARS use TARG/TGAR. So that means if i do have BARS programmed my TGAR/TARG is irrelevant? My T1 TARG is set to 1,2. The users' phones are all TGAR 1. So i thought that meant noone was actually accessing the T1 when they call out, but if the first part of this posting is correct then TARG/TGAR doesn't matter, right?

"Targ" is set in the rdb and to be able to use the route the tgar on the set has to be equal to or greater than targ of chosen route.

so if the rout TARG is 1,2 (it says both 1 and 2) and the set is TGAR 1, are they blocked from accessing the T1? and also, I thought if TARG/TGAR matched the set was blocked.

I think that it has to equal to work. How do you have two tgar's on one T1, and why? Ncos has to be greater on the set than the ncos of the route to work.

please look next to TARG prompt. Where is NCOS prompt?

OK. I think you got me. I have never seen more than 1 targ on a route and don't know why it would have 2. In ld 86 the default is to ignore targ to place a call using bars. so if that is at default it won't matter on your T1. NCOS works with FRL in the RLI of the route.

My ESN data block in ld 86 says TGAR NO. The NTP says that means "check for trunk group access restrictions". so if it's set to NO does that mean TARG/TGAR is irrelevant?

That's the way I understand it. But if I were you until I tested a couple of things I would treat it like it did matter!

The NCOS is on the trunk not the route; and I think 1brc is a little confused regarding targs and tgars - they don't have anything to do with the ncos.

The rule I learned is if they match the call won't go out. There is also the TGAR yes or no prompt in the esn data block that tells the switch if it should look at the targs and tgars or not. (look in NTP in LD 86 under TGAR).

I used to be very familiar with targs and tgars, but haven't used them in a while, so maybe someone else can help answer this for you. I can remember reasons that we used to put more than one targ on a route though - to block certain sets from going out that route, but allowing them to go out two other different routes. For example DN 5000-tgar 1 can't go out route 1, but can go out route 2. DN 5005-tgar 2 can't go out route 1 or 2 but can go out route 3. I hope I didn't confuse things even more!

commgal is correct:
1st tgar has to be set to yes -
and if the tgar on the set matches the targ on the rdb it can not go out that route.
next targ/tgar can be useful even in BARS - depending on the situation. I use it all the time in switches where there is multi customers but only have the s/w for one customer. That way each group can use there own trunks.

ALso Targ 2 may be able to access other RDB that that Targ 1 can't. As in Admin people or COE, you have to look at the Tgar of the phones

great. lots of info. But the bottom line seems to be that, if in LD 86 TARG is set to NO, then I don't have to concern myself at all with it. Right? please say yes!

If ld 86 TARG is set to no you can use your targ/tgar settings to block direct trunk access calls. With out the tgar set you can place toll calls by dialing the ACOD code on a phone with CTD class of service that is normally restricted by bars. This also usefull when used on paging trunks to prevent access by dialing the paging access code.

thank you reachkaps. that was the answer I was looking for!
