TAR is running extremly slow - any sugestion

When I create or extract using tar -cvf (-xvf) /dev/tape it is takeing 6 hours to read 30 GB of data. I am using a Quantum DLT7000 tape drive. Any sugestions on how to speed up the process ( I'm thinking it should take about 1/3 of that time. Thanks in advance for your help.
