Tapes Ejects after somewhile on backup! help!

Hey all...
the story is this: BE 9.1 windows 2000 sp4, Seagate 12/24GB DDS3 SCSI.

sometimes, and i emphasize: sometimes, after some 1h or so (randomally) the tape ejects for some reason, and BE says "please insert overwriteable storage".

the do retension of the tape, and also overwrite if un-appendable.

i updated the FW of the tape to the latest, and the drivers, i tried both veritas and win2000 shipped oones.

what do u think can cause this?

What are you media set properties set to? How are you jobs setup. You may have tapes that are not overwritable , but appendable and running out of tape.

hey.

the media set is configure 1h for overwrite protection
NONE for overwrite level
and infinite - allow append
....

my jobs are set up that it will append until it cannot be appenable and then overwrite.

i have sony dds3 tapes.. they are overwriteable.

You have just answered your question!

The media is being appended to & then running out of space. Even if the tape contains backup sets that have expired once it has appended to the tape BE will not overwrite those expired sets & will ask for additional media.


Changing you job to Overwire media should solve the problem (remember that BE will NEVER overwrite protected media).

but in that way,
it will backup, and overwrite it again and again.
i want it to backup, lets say 2gb, and append until reaches 24gb, and then overwrite the first 2gb!

You can't do that with any backup software - as soon as you overwrite a tape you lose everything on that tape.

I think you need to go out and purchase some more tapes, 1 for every day of the week would be a start.

I have 1 for each day
and the total backup size is 9gb.. my tapes are 24...
so you say each time it will overwrite????
