Tapecopy and Sequence numbers

Arcserve 11.1 SP2 (Build 3200)

I am using the tapecopy command to archive disk based backups to tape for long term retention, so far so good.

However, recently this process has started to span over to 3 tapes and I have noticed that the 3rd tape is being created as sequence 2. This obviously causes problems when trying to merge the tapes as it asks for sequence 3 which doesn't exist and refuses to merge any further.

Two questions:

1/ is there any way to merge the tapes?

2/ Is there a way to stop this happening in the future.

Update the firmware in the tape drive.
