hi,
have you a tape-library ? ( a tower with tape-driver + robot). If I don't mistake, tapeutil is used to load and unload tape, and I found it on a floppy coming together tape-library.
If we are speaking about tape-library, this needs a driver and needs a SCSI address as a TapeDriver. Configured this,
you will see a device as /dev/smc0 (???) and the taputil commands will refer to this, no to /dev/rmtx
Thanks for the info but I'm not referring to tape library. I'm looking for the specific fileset I need for "tapeutil". I need to check my existing internal tape drive.
I need it to check my internal tape... I have already run diag and it doesn't report any problems but I couldn't use my tape drive for backup... even for simple "tar" operations...
Again thanks! I think I'll just replace it with another tape drive(backup) ^_^
I just have seen your question in this forum...It is 5days old.
But precisely I would like to answer your query:
The fileset you need to install for 'tapeutil' command is:
Atape.driver 7.1.5.0.
For your backups ...you don't have to install this.
To use tape facilities:inotherwords to have local tape device available....please check with command
#lsdev -Cc tape
You should get the output displaying "rmt0 available....."
Then u can goahead !

I like to butt in with an Atape related question on this thread. I have Atape installed and want to control my STK L40 SCSI Library Robot with the 'tapeutil' command. I can access the tape drives but not the robotics. I do't even have a /dev file for the robot. Anyone knows what I'm missing?
from the risc, a cable goes to the library case and (from outside or inside) reaches the Tape (you see /dev/rmt0).
By a 2nd cable, attach the tape to the libray itself.
Library has a SCSI id how a disk or tape: if your cables are all attached, maby your Library ID conflicts with an one already present in Risc: Tape,Disk(s)CDrom.
Put the 1st AIX cd and enter smitty cfgmgr and choose /dev/cd0 in input devices. At the end you will see a /dev/smc0 device.
We are using 3583 automated tape library for backups.for tapeutil command u need to have a file atape.sys on ur system.to identify the positioning of tape drives and source just type tapeutil it will give u a number of options.choose element information to identify the source and tape drive numbers. In our case the tape drives numbers are 256 and 257 and the source number to insert the tape is 16.we usually give the following commands to load and move the tape.
Loading Tape:-
tapeutil -f /dev/smc0 move -s 16 -d 256
(to insert the tape in tapedrive 1,where 16 is source and 256 is destination)
to take the backup:-
