Sorry if some of this sounds hockey but I am not the reg
backup guy. I'm the backup for the backup and know very little of Arcserve:

Last week it took forever to inventory the tapes in our silo, but it eventually did it and the backup was OK. The backup ran fine on M-T but again this Fri didn't go. It
looked like it was going to inventory then it would say bad media for whatever is in each particular slot. I logged in this AM and it was still said it was waiting for valid media to be inserted. Since it was this AM we couldn't kick off a full and went and canceled then (put them on hold).

In an attempt to get them going for tonight we rebooted the server and power cycled the tape silo. We loaded today's tapes and they eventually loaded ok. Problem is, when you try to inventory the tapes msg pops up saying "device is offline" even though the silo is online and it looked ok (flashing green light on front of silo). There are also SCSI errors relating to not finding the device (DLT).

Anyone know how to change the status to Online??
thanks!

Hi
We need to know
1-Is your tape library connected directly to backup server?Or if there a SAN or not.
2-The Cause of offline maybe because of Hardware problem
see if there is any hardware error appears in event viewer

If there is no Hardware issue:
3-From windows--Devices Are you able to see the chnager and the all drive(s)?

4-From Registry HK_Local_machine-->Software-->Computer Associates-->ArcserveIT-->Base-->TapeEgine

4-Stop the Tape Engine
5-Delet the key TapeEngine
6-Run Device Configuration
7-See if you are able to see the Changer and Drive(s)
properly.
8-Assign The Drive(s)
9-If your Tape library having a BarCode then select the
option
10-Assign the cleaning tape
11-Now open the Arcserve
12-Start the tape Engine
13-It should it Inventtory & update your slots
14-Try to do a backup and check if it is working or not

Note:Is your tape library connected througth a SAN then
you have to stop the tape Engine from all distributed server do those stpes on Primrary server.

Hi
Yes the doc you mentioned is similar to what you have written
but delete the Tapeednige Key from registry before following this
doc.

NO You don't need to modify the job scripts at all.

mohamdr

Thanks!

I did follow the doc but did NOT delete that reg key. Seems
to be working OK. Why should the reg key be deleted?

Thanks in advance!!

Marcus

Hi
deleting the Registry Key is to just make sure you don't have
anything left from before(to start from scratch.

I am happey to here from you that your problem get resolved.

mohamdr

Make sure the Windows Native Device is disabled. Let Arcserve's Tape ENgine drive the device.

I had the same problem and the solution Mohamdr suggested was perfect. Thanks!
