tape drive problem

We have a problem with 2 scsi tape drives. We have one DLT and one LT0 drive on a chain.

The problem was that backups were not working on either tape drive. The error report had some tape drive and scsi buss errors. We have changed the cables. We then decided to remove both (rmdev) tape drives and change the scsi id. After doing this, the cfgmgr hangs and we cannot add either tape drive now.

cfgmgr -v hangs on "number of running methods:1" and we cannot kill the process from the previous cfgmgr (/usr/lib/methods/cfgncr_scsi -l scsi1 in the ps -ef list)

Reluctant to reboot at the moment since this is a busy server.

At the moment there is 1 LT0 tape drive and 1 DLT tape drive on the chain. The DLT is directly connected to the server.

Possibly also the termination.
Run cfgmgr after disconnecting one of the devices,then make conclusions.
Also - are you not using a too long scsi cable for a single ended scsi ?

tape drive failure can cause SCSI_ERR10, in fact just about anything will cause a SCSI_ERR10, including bad adapter or bad device or wiggling the connector. i suspect bad drive. try cfgmgr without drive attached and see if you come out clean. also try tape on another machine or adapter if possible, but no adapter errors listed so your card is probably fine.

I have problem with 3490 on same server. I change cable,
adapter, terminator - no effect. Problem resolved after I
upgraded adapter device drivers to latest available
(it was 4.3.3.75)
