How do i trouble shoot the failed hardware??

Hardware and Permanent....usually means the tape drive has bit the bullet..
and you need to call IBM Hardware to replace it.

Tape_Err2:
Error Description: TAPE DRIVE FAILURE

This error is logged by the tape device driver in the event of a permanent
hardware error involving the tape device. Either these errors cannot be retried,
or all allowed retries have been exhausted. It is unlikely that I/O operations
to the tape device can continue after one of these errors.

Some time there is sense data that the diag program can use...and you can
run diags on it...but if you have a hardware support contract from IBM...call them

try this:

* use tape drive cleaner, if you have one
* insert it (3X or more)
* can you see "amber" LED flashing? or ON
* check error log (errpt -a | pg or errpt | pg)
* if LED turn to green, try to use clean/new tape to test
* say, tar cvf /dev/rmt# /etc/hosts (# = tape drive number)
* check saved file by - tar tvf /dev/rmt#

if things' didn't work out - call for IBM assistance, you may need to replace your tape drive.

really impressed by ur answers but "all" tape cartriges cannot get loaded.
They get ejected immediately!!!

cheers

The fact that the tapes are ejected immediatly leads me further to believe that the drive is bad. If you have a hardware contrat i would definatle vcall a CE out to look at it. We has this problem about a year ago. I have also heard of CE's acutally opening the case and cleaning the drive head to resolve the issue.

One last thing you can try to see if the tape drive justs needs to be
reset:

diag -c -d /dev/rmt0
tctl offline;
(then clean tape drive)

or
tctl -f /dev/rmt0 rewin
or
hold the eject button down for 1 full minute...

or
put test tape in and try to do a tar -cvf /dev/rmt0 /etc
then tar -tvf /dev/rmt0
if that does not work
you need hardwdare.

Hi there,

I think the problem with your tape drive is a genuine one if your tape drive ejects the tapes immediately please get your hardware guy to check it or replace it and even after replacing you are getting errors I would suggest you to upgrade the microcode of your tape drive with the latest one. You can find the microcode on Exabyte site..

Thanks

Dilip

The PERManent type of error says IO manager of AIX was tired trying to communicate with tape drive... call your local RS/6000 hardware source for a new unit!
I hope it works...
Unix was made by and for smart people.
