Hello, I am having a problem with my pc. I am running windows 2000, intel pIII 500 mhz, asus mb. The system was just fine until about 5 days ago. When I try to pull up any program, including anything in the start menu, it takes about 2 minutes to pull up the program. The CPU isnt overworking and there is plenty of free memory when this is going on but it just takes forever. We havent istalled any new programs and I deleted the temp internet files, cookies, defraged, ran norton antivirus, unistalled all unneeded programs. None of this seemed to help. Is there anything else I can do? What could have caused this?

Virus or spyware?

Go to Start, Run, type cmd and hit enter. Type netstat -a and see if you are connected to a lot of IP addresses. That's one way of seeing if someone is connected to your computer.

I checked it out and there aren't any unnessasary connections. I have ran adaware and cleaned everything up with no luck. Any other guesses?

Have you run spyware checking/removal software such as Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D over the machine lately?

John

Yes I have ran adaware with no progress

I have seen a lot of these issues lately. I use spybot and that helps significantly. However, some malware are pretty sophisticated in that they will drop an exe on the pc and then put an entry in the registry. Inspect the hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run for any entries that reference a malware or spyware program and delete them.

Do you have any version of Kazaa installed ?

If at first you don't succeed, keep at it until you can't even think straight !

Hi,
Run through all the steps outlined in the malware faq below, even if you have done some of them before....
Has you machine received any software updates from microsoft?

Can you check to see which process(es) is/are running most of the time?

Some of these issues with W2K also revolve around a corrupt profile. Copy your profile to another location. Then delete your current profile and then log in to create a new profile.
