Which is correct? Is either? I guess the more precise way to say it would be, "I am going to nap." The same applies to "shower".

I have a Canadian friend (Ontario) who tends to say "have" yet people in New York say "take".

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Andrew

Im going to have a shower" sounds much better than "Im going to take a shower" . What you going to do, run off with the shower head?

Both are correct. It's a combination of light verbs and local dialects.

It's a long way down the list, but one of the definitions for "Take" is "to adopt, choose, or avail oneself of for use"

Not quite so far down the list for "Have" is "to experience especially by submitting to".

So I guess either works.

All I know is if you take a nap, don't take one of mine. I only have 3 left and the weekend's coming up.

For me it's always been take for nap and shower.

For some unknown reason I tend to say say "have my shower", which my wife gives me no end of grief for. "So where's mine then???"

Why not take a nap, and have one too? [wink]

My wife always says, "I'm gonna jump in the shower and then [blah], [blah], [blah]...."

To which my response is, "If you're going to jump, be careful. Most accidents happen in the bathroom."

Somehow we have stayed together for 20+ years.

PS: from Pennsylvania and I 'take' a shower...

Heck, I got a shower at home, so I do not need to TAKE one...

and as Thadeus mentioned, jumping into the shower (or jump in the shower) can be painful, if it's soapy...

I just prefer to shower in the shower, but I disdain attending a baby-shower, all that yaking can drive one crazy...
