Tabs missing in Internet Options 2

I work for an ISP and this one has thrown me for a loop I copied from an email the customer sent:

"In Tools, Internet Options, the tabs there are different than they used to be. There is now no Advanced Tab, for one thing. Plus, the tab that dealt with Internet security and Restricted Sites Zone is gone. Instead of the following tabs that used to be there (General, Security, Content, Connections, Programs, Advanced), the tabs that are available in Tools,
Internet Options now are: General, Privacy, Content, Connections, Programs."

Can anybody shed some light on this one? I have no idea why tabs would go missing.

You don't say what OS they're running (and...maybe they didn't tell you either), but you might find that their registry has been toyed with/corrupted in certain keys. Check this out:

Thanks so much for your replies that fixed it right off the bat.

That was an odd one, not something I think this user could have done, maybe some hijacking spyware did it so she couldnt change any options I told her to run spybot after that and see what results she got.

I have a very similar problem with the one described by awreneau -- My IE-6 tools/intrnet options only has 5 tabs - the same ones he listed. I am missing "security" and "advanced". The difference is that the computer I am on (Gateway Pentium II, 400mz, 256 ram, Comcast cable modem) runs Win98.

I first noticed the problem about 3 months or so ago when I began having trouble downloading many things, mostly to Adobe Acrobat, Real player (audio or video) and the MSFT player (audio and video), but not all such files are unable to download and a number of other files are unable to download as well. The download appears to start, but then "file not found" or a similar message appears with an "exit" or "cancel" tab. I cannot access any Microsoft download using IE6 nor can I access the MS update site - I am greeted with a message that "you have to be an administrator" to access the site. Interestingly enough, the problem is just with IE -- I can download, even through Microsoft, using Netscape.

Apparently, something in my computer has told IE that I am on a network but not an administrator, or something within IE is set for that. This computer is not now nor has ever been on a network (I have been the only user) and as far as I know, Win98 does not even have this capability. There is nothing in the "help" files, and I searched the Bios for a clue there - no luck.

I uninstalled IE6 (with the SP1 patch) and tried IE5 - same problem. Using Netscape (Bill Gates would love that) I downloaded and reinstalled IE6 -- same problem. I tried IE6 repair, no luck. I tried pcpitstop, but it would not let me download their test program, and I tried browsertune, which twice completely locked up my computer. My browser screen says "Internet Explorer provided by Comcast" at the top, but pulling down the "help" tab, it says it is IE6 with the SP1 update and that it has been modified. Comcast claims that they have made no changes to IE6 other than to put their name on it even after I went all the way to the top complaining.

For some reason, IE is apparently convinced I am on a network and I am not the administrator.

Anyone have a clue what the problem is and how to resolve it??

I have found the source of my problem (and probably the one you refer to also) - the js.fortnight.c worm. It does a number of things, including changes in the registry removing the tabs. The fix posted earlier eliminates the tab problem (in Win98, go to the rigestry key and delete the two entries for the "security" and "advanced" tabs, which show a "1" value).

That did not solve all my problems, though, and I still cannot download many things with IE-6 (including anything from Microsoft and almost all programs), always getting a "file not found" type message with a "cancel" button. Continuing to work on that problem.
