Hi,

I know I shoudlve read all the manuals before I started, but I'm in the thick of it now. :)

I've got 2 raid 1 mirros.
2 x 146GB drives for OS, Tablespace & Indexes
2 x 72GB drives for redo logs and temp tablespace.

What I'm wondering is, should I move the Indexes over as well to balance up IO between the main tablespace and the indexes ?

Whats the best way to improve IO performance ?

(The whole DB is only about 40GB)

Exie,

One of the beauties of using a properly striped file system is that the striping typically results in enough de facto load balancing that you do not need to worry too much about spliting table-data and index-data tablespaces onto different file systems.

Personally, with well striped file systems, I allocate a single tablespace per application on my Oracle databases.

Mufasa,

Sounds great, but what does "well striped" mean ?

I've got 4 disks, with an on-board caching raid controller, whats the best setup ?

I started with 2 drives, so went a simple mirror to start with, and then added another 2 (different size).

If it were possible to add another 2 72GB's down the track, how much difference would that likely make ? .. 5% .. 10% ... 20% ?

Frankly, Exie, I leave the striping schemes up to my systems administrator(s). I must defer on the striping specifics to either someone more knowledgeable on the topic here in the Oracle forum(s), or to someone from one of the operating-system forums (if you post a striping-related question in an o/s forum).

A fo ben, bid bont.

Hi,

Just to add a little more info if I could.

A good practice for dB's these days (heavy I/O ones, not necessarily data warehouse, although it can apply)is the SAME method (Stripe All Mirror Everything).

A lot of times it's not the amount of space you have available, but the spindles to handle the I/O.

Depending on your application running the dB, you could have a bottle neck on either the logs or the table spaces with only one spindle.

So if it were possible, have 2 striped than mirror with the other 2 and just create different mount points.

Just something to think about if you can change your disk setup.

Good Luck
