Table Browser does not 'fetch' any tables back from Database.

When I click on 'table browser' in Business Objects, after waiting overnight (not me, physically..), the list of modules are shown but with no tables in. If I click on a module's contents it says 'Fetching tables' for a split secind before returning nothing. If I do a refresh the modules list goes blank. I have been able to do this until very recently, my Connection, user Account (Supervisor-Designer), BO version (6.5.1, ORACLE Database 10g) etc have all not changed.

The problem we have is because there is more than 20 000 tables to return when 'table browser' is clicked and this takes overnight. Other users here with same resp. can all come in next morning to a full list to choose from - except me. We're all confused. Can anyone offer suggestions to what this could be?”

I've tried scanning it via sqlnet.ora to no avail.

Many thanks in advance,

Steven

What do you mean by 'table browser'? Are you trying to import table definitions into a universe (by means of designer?) Or are you refreshing a list of values from reporter?

Ties Blom

Yes, sorry, I'm trying to import table definitions into a universe.

Another couple of things since I posted. Ive successfully imported a smaller ORACLE 9i database universe and imported tables to it no problem (using exactly the same user login and settings). It only seems to be our Finance Database that is stopping me. Also, the other 2 Support Analysts here (who can import tables) are on ORACLE 10g client (I was on 9i) so I've installed 10g too but cannot see if that works until tomorrow morning.

All comments are very welcome,

Steven

This is due to the ID you're using. It doesn't have rights to the tables you are browsing for.

Steve is probably right. Simple test is to create a derived table in the empty universe (if you know a finance table and tablefield) and witness whether this works.
Big chance that finance tables are recreated under a schema where the id has no access to.

Many thanks for your comments.

THe ID Im using? my userID is setup identically to all other members. Where are these 'rights' set? (forgive my ignorance.) Using the same userID, I can access/update/create etc in the 'empty universe' as well as import tables via the table browser no problem.

Could you please provide a few pointers on how I check the link between my user ID setup in BO Supervisor (which I can access) and the DBase schema where the Finance tables are.

Also, somebody mentioned change the way grants are done so that you only see the tables in your universe instead of all in the schema - again, is this a dataBase thing or can it be done via Supervisor/Designer.

many thanks for your time..

Steven

Each universe has a specific 'native' connection. This BO connection is stored within the repository.
The BO connection itself has parameters assigned like:

1. Type of RDBMS / middleware
2. Specific database ID (for Oracle SID entry in tnsnames.ora for instance)
3. Autorization ID (user name
4. Password

Within Oracle the Authorization ID will have a specific set of rights. For reporting purposes it is good practice that this ID has read-only access to tables/views/synonyms.
However the DBA can allow access to - for instance - a schema that stores objects that are a subset of all tables available.

So, in your case the Universe /connection auth ID may have rights revoked on the group of finance tables.

Check with the DBA!

Time for some training. BO just points to tables. You can't have them in your universe. Don't pay any attention to what you were told.

If this works for 1 universe but not another, then the 2 universes are using different BO connections.

Thanks for all your comments.

1. Type of RDBMS / middleware
2. Specific database ID (for Oracle SID entry in tnsnames.ora for instance)
3. Autorization ID (user name)
4. Password

About a dozen of us here are creating the BO connection to the SAME database using the SAME Type of RDBMS / middleware (Secured), the SAME database ID (all using the same tnsnames entry), and the SAME authorization ID AND password. Yet, others can access the tables or that table browser-press-escape-after-30seconds-thing to get tables but I cannot.

Ive installed ORACLE 10g client as the other people but to no avail. De-INstalled Business Objects application and have asked for it to be re-installed as a last hope that some default setting re-instated will trigger success..

Steven

Did you check whether this is a BO specific problem?
For instance by using another query-tool and see if you can browse the tables where you are after?

Other idea: Try changing the array fetch size (is a universe property) step-by-step to a lower value to check whether this has any effect.
I had some succes with this in the past when working with more exotic databases (other than oracle anyway)

Ties Blom

Ties

yes I can happily log into the DataBase using either SQl PLus, TOAD, ORACLE Reports or ORACLE Financials no problem.

Regarding your array-size suggestion, Im awaiting the BO disks from Customer Support to re-install the application but will try it as soon as Iim once again up and running.

thanks for your time,

Steven

I'll be very surprised if reinstalling does anything.

Well well. The good old remove and re-install has worked! Can't understand it. After simply getting the product re-installed, I opened up Designer, imported 2 differing Universes (seperately, for 2 testing) that used the LIVE Finance Database that was causing me the problems,
clicked on table browser, waited approximately 60 seconds, hit escape, all tables were visible, I dragged and dropped no problem.

I didnt need to reconfigure and create new BO Database Connections, replace the BoMain Key, in fact, anything. Totally mystery yet it works so Im happy!" Many thanks for all who read, helped or assisted.
