When I log into this HP UNIX machine with the root account, everything works fine, but then i switch user to my own user account it doesn't work.

When I am root, the promt looks like this
[root@testserver] /systems >

When i use my own account, the promt looks like this
$

Anyone know how to fix this? so i can TAB my way through commands on my own account??

You probably need to compare the PS1 setting in root's and your own account. This controls the way the prompt is displayed. root's will have something fancy, yours won't. Copy what's in the root .profile to yours and you should be sorted.

By TAB, I assume you mean history? If so, check what shell root uses and assign that to your account (in /etc/passwd - but be careful!) to obtain similar features. Hope this helps.

I logged in as root and did this

cd /
cp .profile /home/ldf/.profile

and it seems like it works now...

i hope this will work :)
thanx

Good. One proviso with your approach. I would advise always making a copy of whatever .profile you're overwriting just in case you need to revert back to it. Believe me, it happens!!
