T5120: Booting from DVD

Anyone had any issues doing a cold boot using a dvd from the ok> prompt on these servers?

(oh, and yes, I have tried many different medias)

I have two brand spankin' new T5120's.

For the DAM of me, they will NOT boot from a DVD. If I do a,
boot cdrom, boot cdrom -s, boot cdrom - install ...etc, It errors with the following error message. I have done a little research and it appears others have had the same issues with the T5120. I opened a case with Sun on this issue about 5 days ago, they are stumped, they have done the normal replace part theory, I upgraded the firmware...still no work. Since they do not know what to do next, I have to hound them cause they do not want to call me back.

The weird part is, I can manually mount the dvd I put into the dvd drive from the pre-installed OS the T5120's have.

I usually do not need the dvd drive, but since my jumpstart server is not connected to the subnet I need to install this server, I was just going to do it the old fashion way. Especially since no others servers will be added to the subnet in the future.

I sure hope I am doing some id10t error, but .....

Are these "original" DVDs or some that you have written?

Do any other types of machine boot off them okay?

Is the DVD drive really connected via USB (I know you've verified the device path - just curious)?

What version of the OS is the DVD? I know these are very sensative to version types as I've built these boxes before. You want to make sure you have the latest and greatest from SUN.

Also, have you tried "boot -cdrom"? I know these are touchy like that.

Hi,

they are the DVD set sent by Sun, it was included in the purchase. It is Solaris10 update 5.

I think the minimum for these servers is update 4. From what I have been told it does use USB.

well it turns out that the issue was with the power distribution module on the servers, they replaced it and all is back to as it should be, meaning, from the 'ok> boot cdrom' works just fine.

I can not believe two new servers have the same issue, talk about terrible quality control. To make it worse, every part for these servers that they replaced, they had to order it from the vendor, which took 24hrs. So for companies with platinum coverage, it would be totally useless. they did not have anything locally in stock, including the part that fixed the issue. terrible!!! I sure hope they work on their support, I like Sun and in fact have loyalty to them to some degree, but they just need to work out their support issues. This has been the aspect that has been frustrating me lately.
