Hello Nortel Gurus,
I am replacing 2 TDM PRI's, loops 2 and 3, with one VPRI (voip) on an 81C/ 5.5. They are the Primary and Secondary references for 12 other spans in the switch, along with a remote Option 11, that is slaved to the 81 for all trunking. I've heard that VOIP trunks need no clocking and I find that hard to believe. Can someone enlighten me as to how I should approach this. The back story is that these were the only two spans in the switch 22 years ago. Everything else was copper. Moved all that to digital. Now everything is "hanging" off 2 and 3. Help me OB1.

VOIP trunks are virtual, no clocking required. Are you taking the VOIP trunks directly into the 81 with a Signal Server or is there a device front ending the VOIP trunks then being handed off to you as PRI?

KC,
They are providing a router. The PRI is "riding" on a 10 Mg circuit. There are dedicated ports on the router for a conventional PRI handoff. RJ-48. At least that's what AT+T is telling me.

Then when they hit the 81 they are still PRI's,not VOIP, so yes, you still need clocking. If you cant clock on those new PRI's then you will have to move the clocking source to something you can clock off of.

Thanks. I'm going to put the span in the switch, on a spare card for testing. If all is good, I should just need to move my secondary reference to another loop, since 3 will no longer exist after the cut over.

If you have nothing else to clock off of we have found that if you make yourself the Master and the incoming T-1 the user in your Clock programing it will work like that as well.. not recommended but if you have nothing else

My guess is you will still be able to clock off of the new circuits just fine.

Putting yourself as the master or Net end of the circuit is package dependant so you will have to check if you have the correct pkg's. What type of router are they supplying? There are some pretty easy docs online now & (Im going to swear) Cisco generally will support being the master (although not the most reliable).
