It doesn't make sense that the tape is full. I had other jobs run on this server that are larger and they fit on one tape. It is only about 17 gigs of data and my tapes are 12/24 gig. When I put the new tape in it only backs up about 200 mb of data and then completes.

From the sounds of it, you're getting almost a 1.5:1 compression ratio. That's pretty good. Executable and binary files don't compress very well (unlike text files) and most ZIP'd files actually get larger when run through software or hardware compression.

Unless you're backing up pure text, you'll never even get close to a 2:1 ratio. The most reliable figure to bank on is the 12G native capacity of the tape. Anything beyond that is pure gravy. It's no surprise that it's asking for a second tape after 17Gigs.....

Prydonian and Justin are on track. It all depends on what type of data you backing up. Just becuase one job write 17gig and anotehr 20gigs is the type of data being backed up. As prydonian report usually the rule of thumb for Great compression is half the difference..so 18gig in you case would be the breaking point.

Well there ya go, you put a new tape in and it finished the backup off. The tape is full and you needed another one.

Yeah 17G on a 12/24 is pretty good, but for sure you are hitting the max capacity.
