System slow to boot up

Everytime this system boots, it takes over 7 minutes for it to complete the boot process. Once the system is up and running, everything seems to work fine. Have timed various portions of the boot cycle and found the registry load to take the longest. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Assuming W98 is installed and the hd has been scandisked and defraged and the dma box in the hd properties of device manger has been ticked (if not and it causes any problems afterwards then reboot into safe mode and undo) then maybe the following may help seeing as you have isolated the problem to the registery. If like me you are installing /uninstalling then the registery will always become bloated over a period of time and will take longer and longer to load from the rubbish left behind.
1. Have you checked msconfig to see what is loading during bootup? A program I use with mscongfig is Startup Manager written by Daniel Hoffman.
2. Also load up the boot menu from dos (press f8 or ctrl keys during bootup) and select safe command and then type at the prompt
" scanreg /fix /opt "
3. A good website which has a large slection of tips and files which can/cannot be deleted at startup time is

4. Of course uninstalling unneeded software is a good start ;=)
