Hello,

I have one system in the district here that has WindowsXP and when you boot the system up after a long night you do not see it scandisk. If you turn the system off for a few class periods and then turn it on, or you restart the system you will be prompted to stop a scandisk that will take place.

Now I know some people are saying that we should let the scandisk run. We did a few times but it still comes up. I have run Defrag on it as well as looked for any way to stop if from running.

Has anyone seen this kind of thing where it runs scandisk just on bootup? Everytime almost? Except from a cold boot where the system sat all night.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. This one has me stumped!!

IdahoTech,
are you sure that the system is being properly shut down?
sounds like it is at the end of the day, but at the other times it is not.
if not properly shut down on the next boot scandisk will run.
regards,
longhair

The drive manufacturer will have free diagnostic software on their site which will enable you to thoroughly check out the condition of the hard drive. Make sure you have a backup of any valuable data on this possibly failing drive.

Some things to check out.

Well the system does shut down properly with no errors of any kind actually. I will check into the article on the corrupted hive but also the one on CHKNTFS and try that one first and see what happens. I also have SpinRite6 that I will run on it to see if it may be a disk issue.

I will keep you posted and thanks for the quick responses.

Whenever I see this it means the drive is failing and I should get ready for it to not boot up at all one day.

Do the drive diagnostics like was stated above and make sure you get all of your important stuff off of it.

Its sounds like you might have a dirty bit in the registry that is set - what this means is that when you shut down your machine some data did not properly read or write when it shut down. And you won't know this it will just shut down as normal.

Do you have the check disk set to run at startup in your scheduled tasks? Startup - programs - accessories - system tools - scheduled tasks? If so you can turn it off.

If you are using NTFS you can go to your command prompt then type>'chkntfs /x d:' without the quotes and the d: is replaced by your drive letter. This command will exclude the drive specified.

Another check you can do is to see if your drive is dirty. at the command prompt type 'chkntfs d:' (without the quotes) where d: is your drive letter.
