System Restore is not working. Even if I create a restore point, when I reboot it is gone. I ran SFC and Restore is turned on for all drives. When I go to the Restore page, I get "No are currently no restore points available." If I create a restore point, it will show up on the page. As soon as I reboot, it is gone!

My experience with XP's System Restore is that it doesn't work after you've installed SP1 or greater.

Some research for you to check out.

Just turning it Off and then turning it back ON after a reboot might fix it.

Some general things to try.

Check out your Event Viewer for any errors.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

vanka25: Its been working fine all these years, until a couple of days ago.

linney: Already done all that! Event viewer says it can't be initialized. Other checks (registry) show that it is running OK! Waiting for a "hotfix" from Microshaft". I may have to do repair install - I hate that!!!

Update:
Chkdsk didn't help. Tried "Safe Mode" - restore works, but you can't create in safe mode (the point I made before booting into safe mode disappeared!)! Tried (last resort!), to use a 3-25-08 (most recent) EruNt. Strange: that particular sub-directory copy has no exe, or ini file. All the rest of them do! So its possible that my problems started back before that date. A current "copy" is OK!

What are the details of the Hotfix Microsoft sending you, let us know if it fixes your problem?

Are you (your user, or any Admin user), able to access the System Restore folders?

Are the restore points created in the above folder (have you checked to see that they actually physically exist) before any reboot?

Still waiting on M.S.

Yes, I can "read" the S.V.

If I create a restore point, it shows in the "restore" list - when I reboot, it is gone.

This morning when I booted up, the restore point was there like it should be, when I rebooted - it was gone! Even though it says "no restore points available", the S.V. is there for all the partitions, and the second internal drive.

Clarifying, System Restore GUI says you have no restore points, but when you look in the System Volume Information folder you see Restore Point folders, is that correct?

If so, how far back do the RP folders go?

Can you use those (if you actually have them) to go back in time as per this process?

This is a layman's version of Q307545 in simple language. You might even be able to do it via Guided Help.

The "RPx" folder is there, but there are no "snapshot" files".

So, I guess that is why S.R. says that there are "no restore points available"!

Back to the drafting board!!!

You probably have one of those (the Registry files) in the C:/Windows/Repair folder but it will be pretty dated unless you have attempted to repair Windows lately or created and restored a system backup.

Which leads me to suggest, wait for Microsoft, assuming they haven't forgotten about you?

Question (before I screw things up worse!): the cmd line given (secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose), should "%windir%" be replaced with my particular windows directory (c:\windows)?

Tried with "%windir%" - does nothing (actually just opens a "Help" page about variables!

Tried with "C:\windows" in place of windir, and everything went as the instructions said (including the error message), but didn't help. I created a restore point before rebooting - and it was gone when I rebooted.

The more you disclose about your machine the more I begin to wonder about the general health of it. Do any of the environment variables work on your machine?

What Hotfix are you waiting for, number, name, etc? Is it available elsewhere, usually Microsoft just supply you with an URL and you download it yourself, or are they writing a special program for you, in which case it may take a bit of time to be delivered?

This doesn't give you an answer to your question, but maybe helpful...

I had a problem with a machine that was playing up, and found that upon opening System Restore the first window was completely blank. Tried a couple of the usual tricks but nothing doing.

I then booted up using a Winternals ERD 2005 CD, and was able to restore to a previous point without further difficulty.

Its been so long since I had a usable restore point (I've added software), I don't want to go back. I just want System Restore to work! <grin> Once I get it working, I will use "ERUNT" to make a current reg back-up. My most recent EURANT (03-25-08) is bad!

Well, I got the hotfix. Didn't do any good! Looks like a repair install! If I remember right, last time I did this, it was just after M.S. Update had that problem with certain updates not being recognized and installed. Before I go through that again - does anyone remember the dll's that had to be reactivated to fix that problem? I'd like to have the info handy before I get started. I'd definitely like to get this sorted out before SP-3 comes out!
