Hello

My system restore fails every time I attempt it. This has happened the last 3 times I had a need to attempt restore. (Three attempts separated by months in time, about different issues.) This time, I am thinking something may be wrong with my system restore function.

In this case, it is simply a matter of trying to roll back a browser update.

I saw a whole list of available restore points, and I went to the second one back - from only a few days ago. The restore failed.

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium, OEM from Gateway Laptop about 1.5 yrs old. I allow most updates.

Any Suggestions? Thanks.

Try running System Restore while within safe mode and see if it will succeed.

Thanks for responding.

Backup & Restore Center will not open at all in safe mode.

Did you try to initiate the System Restore by going to Start >All Programs >Accessories >System Tools >System Restore?

Alternatively, boot to the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option and run the following command (this could be run from the command line in the normal Safe Mode option as well): %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

This did not work, even with command prompt. Backup and restore center is unavailable in safe mode.

It displayed and cycled normally in normal mode, but the process failed.

There is is one final way you can get, or try to get, System restore to work.

Have you tried running it out of the Windows environment? If you have an install DVD that you can boot to (or a Startup Repair option via the F8 Safe Mode screen), try launching the System Restore from the options provided when you go down the Startup Repair path.

If that doesn't work you can see if running the System File Checker, either fixes System Restore, or perhaps whatever problems you wanted System Restore to fix in the first place.

How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Try it first by not checking either box (this will run it in a Read-only mode) to see if it flags any hard drive or file problems. If it does, restart it by ticking both boxes, and rerun it to allow it to attempt to fix any found problems.

To get System Restore to work in Safe Mode, you may need to verify that the 'Windows Backup' service is started by using the 'Services' mmc.

Solution:

The problem was caused by Norton NIS 2009.

The problem was resolved by the following steps:

Go into Settings - Miscellaneous Settings - Product
Security and turn off 'Norton Product Tamper Protection'.

Then System Restore worked.
