we have a Windows 2000 server that the system process will jump to between 25% and 30% for no apparent reason, it will then remain there for between 30 seconds to a minute then drop back down, it happens regularly but not at set intervals. Nothing is showing in the event logs, there are no reported hardware errors and there is nothing like USB drives etc, connected to it. we have tried running the sysinternals Process Explorer and can see the spike on the system process but there do not appear to be any other processes going up with it. machine has been scanned for Virus, etc and nothing has shown up.

Any thoughts would be grately received

Well, this isn't totally unusual as servers tend to process. What type of server is this? DB, Web, File, Application, TS???

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Doesn't seem like anything to get too alarmed about. As monsterjta points out, it is a server, so it's job is to process. If you go into task manager and sort the processes by CPU, you should be able to see which process is utilizing the CPU.

Thanks for the replies, we are an smb and the server is used as our DC, file server and application. one of the things we notice is that we have one application that is fairly sensitive to network disruption, we are noticing errors reported by this application that the network path no longer exists which appear to happen at the same time as the system process hits its peak (usually 28%), when we sort by process the nearest process, usually our mail server app, is only at about 3% of CPU use,

Thanks again for any advice offered
