I have a Win98SE machine w/ 32MB ram, AMD K6-II 400 CPU.
The machine works fine for about 5 - 10 min. and then slows down and it will eventually stop. Any ideas?
Thanks

Have you checked the cpu fan? It sounds as if the chip is over heating. If after it stops, can you re-boot immediatly and it works fine? If it doesn't then 95% sure its over-heating. Hope its as simple as that!

Also check for how much HD space you have. You could be running out of space for the swap file. 32 megs of ram with Win98 is cutting it pretty close.

Lack of memory is probably contributes to the issue, however look at what may be running in the background. Run msconfig to see what items are loading at start-up and try to narrow down the hog.
My first guess would be that you are runnning low on system resources and you can check this by right clicking on my computer and going to properties then going to the performance tab. If it gets down in the 40% range or so you should restart you computer and you may also want to think about upgrading your ram. also do what dxd said to see how many programs are loading on startup, especially try and elimintate the programs you dont need that load up in the lower right hand part of the screen where the time is shown.

We are experiencing similar symptoms on macines Win98 1st and 2nd etitions with 64MB of RAM, both notebooks (Gateway 2500LS) and a desktop unit (Dell P-II 300 ). During these states of suspended animation, there is no HD trashing, and Ctrl-Alt-Del reveals that usually some application (not always the same one) is "not responding." In most cases, there is plenty of HD for the swap file, and only a few TSRs showing in the systray. In all cases, a reboot clears up the problem immediately, so it is not an overheating problem.
One reply mentions "msconfig." I don't find this utility on our systems.

To run msconfig, hit Start-Run and type "msconfig" without the quotes, and hit enter.

Go to the Startup tab and remove everything from there and reboot.

If your PC doesn't experience the same problems, the add each one back in, one at a time, and use the PC for a while to see if the problem returns. When/if the problem returns, note which item you added back into the Startup that causes it.

When I reboot my PC, the only things running in the background (ctrl-alt-del shows task list), is Explorer, systray, and my virus scanner.

Check your temp file and clear all .tmp
Henry Drillich
drillich@tpgi.com.au
