System font=squares

Whenever I use Notepad or Wordpad, the text in the dialog boxes appears as symbols or small boxes rather than letters. I've checked the system fonts and everything appears to be correct but how does one know.

Any ideas?

This often occurs with Video Driver problems. Do you have the latest Video Card drivers installed?

I'm using an NVidia GEForce 400 card and I updated drivers within the last month or so.

Thanks for this lead. I hadn't thought of the card as being a possible cause. Come to think of it, since I updated the drivers the problem seems to have increased. I'll check into this lead further.

Check for code page issues. Control Panel, Regional Settings, Language. Specify a known language, or US English as the default.

I followed bcastner's advice but everything was properly set. I appreciate the advice but I could use some more concerning the problem of little boxes being substituted for words in the dialog boxes of notepad and wordpad.

Also, does this happen with files you create, or just files from elsewhere you open?

The codepage= 437

The small squares come up as part of the dialog boxes when I perform a function such as Save or Print. I can't show you how it looks since I can't recreate the squares in this forum box but if I substitute X's for the squares, it looks similar to "XXXXXXXXXXX Print?" or "XXXX File?". This happens in Wordpad and Notepad, and as far as I can tell, in the lower function programs such as Paint, Calculator, or Character Map. Since you brought it up, I do suspect the NVidia card as having something to do with this. It seems to me that this started when I installed the card last year but I just didn't correlate one with the other.

This is a small problem and one I can live with, but I'd just like to figure it out since it shouldn't be happening. I appreciate your input! Thanks!
