Hi I am not an HP UX sysadmin but ours has moved to Australia and we seem to have a dead system disk. The system is old and only used for non-critical things so no support. Tapes don't seem to work so I would like to boot from CD. I really only need access to the RAID to move a few files off the system and then will have a funeral for it. Can anyone help me?

Hi NoHPUX,

Can you provide us with a few details about the system. Is it a 700 series workstation or an 800 series server? Also, what model is the system? 710, 715, 735, 755, 800 etc.

Did your Aussie sys admin leave you any HP-UX CD's. One CD labelled "Recovery" will be handy as you can boot off this disk.

Hi,
Yes, It is a 9000-800 but that is all I know. Does G60 make any sense?

G60 doesn't mean much to me. Did you manage to find the "Recovery" CD?

If you have old configuration of vg's then you can recover your data. Means do you know which physical disk was part of which VG's

Cannot find a recovery Cd only an OS Install CD. I do have a hard copy of what physicals disks belong to what VG but don't really know what to do with it!

Good very good.
You can install the fresh os on old root disk. It will wipe out everything from it. then say for example you had vg01 with one or more lvols.

in old configuration /dev/vg01/lvol1 = /data1 and you need files belong to this filesystem.

on new system
#mkdir /dev/vg01
#mknod /dev/vg01/group c 64 0x010000
#chmod 644 /dev/vg01/group

#vgimport vg01 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0 (this could be a different then your paper copy but you have to figure this out using ioscan you will gets this special file name.

I am guessing that you had only one disk raid.
It will gives you warning but works for me many times.

then
#vgchange -a y vg01
#fsck -a y /dev/vg01/lvol1
#mkdir /data
#mount /dev/vg01/lvol1 /data
