After downloading sp1a when my computer reboots after installation when it gets to the desktop it shuts down then reboots all on its own.And keeps doing that.I can boot into safe mode and remove sp1a and it seems fine.Whats up??Do I need to install it a different way ie not from the windows update site???

Please help

Try downloading the full version of SP1 which is around 130mbs. Run this i would also advise you check yourself with spybot adaware cwshredder and any antivirus and get yourself a firewall.
I had a similar problem with SP1 which was because of some stupid GAIN thing you pick up around the internet

Some versions of Norton caused this problem. If you are still having problems, uninstall all of your Norton Products, reboot and then try to install SP1. Reinstall Norton and get all the updates.

Following on to what "noellees1" said, see if registering the two Dll's mentioned in the following thread help you.

problems w/ SP1 already!?

The only problem SP1 caused on my hp pavilion was to change the scroll bar from grey to black and cause it to scroll two pages with one click unless the pointer was just below the marker bar.

While the problem is not fatal (like failure to reboot), it is annoying.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the help. That looks like it will work. Perhaps I'll forward this to hp, they still haven't figured it out.

my problem is that as soon as i enable onboard sound W/sp1a
it crashes as soon as it get to the desktop. its ac97 sound

See if you can get updated drivers for your Sound Card, obtain any drivers from the manufacturer rather than Windows Updates.

To get further information about the error look in your Event viewer.

Look in the System or Application folder. You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

Take any event error I.D. number and search for it on these sites.

Also check any "Information" line that mentions "savedump" and you should find reference to "recovered from a bug check". This is the Stop Error that caused your problem.

You can also turn off "automatically restart after an error" so it will just halt at the fault and display the full Stop Error and blue screen.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties .
On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery .
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure , and then click OK . The error message on a blue screen should remain on the screen so you can record the error information.

To check conflicting software.
