We run an apache server on solaris 8. Recently it started to behave strangely: the system clock gets screwed up often - resetting the time to as far as 1977. As a result, a series of problems occurrs.

What would cause system clock to reset time and how can we correct it? Thanks in advance.

gben,
root is the only one who can change the system date, so you might consider what scripts apache may be running that use the sticky bit to get across and do "damage". One solution (probably a band-aid) would be to set one of your servers within your network running the "time service" (I am not sure exactly what it is called, but is comes under "ntp"). Once you have a server providing the time service, you can activate time sync on your client under /etc/inet/ntpd.conf, etc, etc.

The more pressing question is why is apache changing the time? One other thing to consider is if the system board battery is going bad. Believe it or not, that battery can cause havoc on the system date/time as well!!
Good luck!.
