system cannot log you on now because computername is not available

Hi
When starting my Windows 2000 Server, I get a message stating some services could not be started.
These consist of:
System Attendant, Exch. POP3, Exch. MTA Stacks, Exch. Information Store, Exch. IMAP4, Exch. Event, and Exch. Directory Sync.

When I try to log on to the Server from a client I get "System cannot log you on now because 'computername' is not available"

I would be very gratefull for any help or advice.

Is the server near its storage capacity? If it gets too full, it will start shutting down services.

Is this machine part of a domain? Is the "computername" the same as the machine you are logging onto? If so I would agree with shrubble in that you may be out of space. See if you can log onto another machine and map a drive to this server and see what the drive is looking like.

The computername is 'primary-server' it is my AD domain controller (the only one) it is also my Exchange 2000 server and Mail-Server so I am quite stuffed without it. There is over 20GB of space on the single partition 'c:' If I try to create a user on this DC I sometimes get the message 'global catalogue could not be contacted' this DC is the Global Catalogue and I have confirmed the 'tick is in the box' stating this.
It is all part of an Active Directory problem but I cannot track it down.
I have researched many web sites which mention this problem and tried all of the fixes mentioned, the only option left is a complete reformat which is obviously not a favorite choice.
The DC was working normally left for a few days turned back on and this problem had manifested itself.
