I got an application I am trying to get going using the Sys::syslog. When it starts I am getting an error.
"getservbyname failed for tcp at /usr/local/etc/dansguardian/logger.pl line 64
unix dgram connect: Connection refused at /usr/local/etc/dansguardian/logger.pl line 64
stream /dev/conslog is not writable at /usr/local/etc/dansguardian/logger.pl line 64
console is not writable at /usr/local/etc/dansguardian/logger.pl line 64
no connection to syslog available at /usr/local/etc/dansguardian/logger.pl line 64"
Can someone help me out not sure where to turn.

First things first,

getserverbyname is failing - connection refused are you connnected to the network, or are there firewalls in the way?

It's running on the box it is connecting to.
Is this possibly a reverse lookup issue?

Ok, I got it working.
It was a syslog issue. Syslog was core dumping because it was unable to create the /var/run/log file for some reason.
I installed msyslog it would not load at first either but it was erroring out at could not create /dev/log file. So with the -p option I started the msyslog /usr/local/sbin/syslogd -p /var/run/log started without a problem. Now I just need to change the startup shell script for the syslog so it uses that option. I hope this might help someone else that runs across this. It was a FreeBSD 5.0 syslogd problem not Perl. I have read similar problems on Solaris.
