I've been tasked with finding a way to Sync email via USB ( not wireless ) with Outlook once one of my Blackberry users gets back from his trips. We don't run Exchange, and I don't want to buy BES just for one user. All I need is for the Blackberry to update the read/unread/deleted/sent folders in Outlook 2000 to match what's been done on the Blackberry. Any ideas?

Download blackberry desktop manager from blackberry.com and use the redirector. Remember the users computer and outlook must stay on if you want this to work. That is the only down fall.

I was under the impression that Exchange was a requirement for the redirector. I tried to setup of redirector without exchange and I never was able to get syncing working.

The redirect forwards mail that i see's in your inbox to your blackbery. Remember you have to keep your pc on withoutlook open.

I'm experiencing the same problem.

When I install the software and choose WebClient, it works fine, but no syncing of emails (only contacts, tasks, etc...)

When I reverse and install the software for Redirecting, the sync no longer works at all. No email/no contacts/no nothing.

Are you sure it is suppossed to work as a standalone? IE-no MS Exchange Server or Lotus Domino.

Curious.

Just a quick question:

You do have an email account linked through the Web Client, right?

Yes, I have 3 accounts linked through the BWC (webclient) and they all work fine. I would rather link them through the redirector so that I can sync the read/unread/filed messages instead of having to read them again. (which is how it is suppossed to work, correct?)

Other than the sync not working, I also get an error message that the computer does not know its default email address, when trying to set up the redirector.

SOLVED:

Turns out that you can, despite what RIM's docs say, use the Desktop Redirector without Exchange. In the Blackberry WebClient website I had to remove my account settings so that it wouldn't check mail from my main email account. Setup Outlook to check my main account (As usual). I then had to uninstall then reinstall the redirector, choosing Exchange (not Lotus) then tell it to use the Redirector (not BES). Once installed I had to connect the Blackberry (Make sure it's not connected during the install) go to the Desktop Manager->Redirector Settings and verify that the PIN was properly filled out. Then go to the Advanced tab and override the default mail address and set it to my main address, say user@mydomain.com not user@yourcarrier.blackberry.com. Then go to the Blackberry, go to options then message settings and change it to "Desktop" from web client. That should be it. I should note that it'll take a while for the redirector to finish its "Verifying forwarding email address" but it does work without exchange.

I'll give it a try this weekend, thanks for the step by step!

Cool, redirector works now. I think that extra tip about changing the message settings from WebClient to Desktop was the one thing I had missed earlier.

And in the end I find out that I really don't like the way that redirector works. I'm happier with the Web Client.....

Bah.... I'm still a few gadgets ahead in the game of he who dies with the most toys wins....
