I thought I had this right, but after moving my acct, it isn't working.
I am used to accounts automatically synchronizing. That is, if I delete something on the desktop it is also deleted from the server.
This is not happening. I'd appreciate information on what have I set up incorrectly.

Also, what is the ost file? It is listed as the default data file, but I don't think this is the case.

thanks.

The ost file is the offline copy of your e-mail. Have you checked that your desktop client is connected to the server and you are not working in offline mode?

Thanks. THat's what I expect. The PST file then is???
I do not believe I am working offline, but I will definitely check. That would make sense.

The pst file is a personal folder where you can create folders and copy e-mails etc from your inbox. I wouldn't reccomend using them unless you have a very good reason, I prefer to keep e-mails in my inbox than move them to a pst file.

Thanks. Stellar.I actually have a couple of very good reasons. the greatest being size and organizational necessity.

There are at least a dozen reasons why .pst files should be avoided if you're using Microsoft Exchange as the email server.

They (.pst) are mainly for POP3 users, and aren't stable when they start getting large. You also have the issue of the data being stored on the end-user's workstation and not on the server - which brings up a slew of other issues.

Really. I have a real mess in my files, since Outlook first set up in PST and I changed servers a couple of times, each time getting a new file assigned (I am still trying to figure out what is where).

I WANT some of the files on the desktop. I am the only user and carry some information around on a thumb drive (backed up on two desktops, or have it on two desktops backed up by a thumb drive, whichever works). There are times I need to work off line, and one of the desktop connections is irremediably slow)

The stability issue is important.

Can the .ostfile also contain local files?

Is it possible to import files from pst to a desktop file with the exclusion of duplicates, and not have it go to the web?

Obviously the usual intuition and practice with other programs won't work here, so I seem to need to get some reading on the issue (Old Eudora user..now also Thunderbird, but that's another issue)...

If you can answer, is it possible to have multiple folders on a desktop and sync them with the server?

thanks.

I am going to
