Having tried tech support (hardware and ISP), Google and signed up to Tek-Tips, I am now busy researching the forums. Slow work on 56K modem.
The story so far: I signed up for ADSL with a telco/ISP in Ireland. Self-install. ZyXEL PRESTIGE 630-11 USB modem, PPPoE software, Dynamic IP.
Worked fine.
Got a new ADSL Router. De-installed(?) ZyXEL. Installed ADSL ROUTER. Worked fine.
Flash, bang, thwack! Lightning strike. End of ADSL Router.
Re-installed ZyXEL. After much fluteing about I got that setup working again.
Then got an SMC ADSL BARRICADE SMC7407BRA. Once connected that locks up. According to SMC there are know problems with this device.
So re-installed ZyXEL. After much fluteing about again, I got that setup working again.
Then it stopped. Synch but no surf. “Error 645”
ISP support went through the check list---"Roll up your left trouser leg, open the fridge door and kick the cat". They said send the USB modem back for testing.
My ISP is sending out a new modem, a combi-one, which I take to be an ethernet/usb (or else it's that guy from Star Wars, Combi 1 Ben Obi)
Came across MAC address threads. Would that have any bearing? I didn't have to register a MAC address.
