Symantec 8.1 and Norton 2003 causing slow downs.

I have an application that uses a VB 6.0 front end with an access db and when users run reports on a machine with either of these versions of norton (haven't tested any others) the report speeds are decreased by over 50%. An example:

Run report and it takes 24 minutes
Remove norton
Run report (same criteria) and it takes 11 minutes

Is there any way to fix this without removing norton? Can you tell norton not to interfere with a certain process?

Does disabling the File System AutoProtect make any difference?
