Sybase varchar error message

Number (7327) Severity (15) State (1) Length or precision specification 1500 is not within the range of 1 to 255.

I am trying to create a varchar(1500) and get this message. I thought the limitation on a varchar was based on default page size and the non-edited number was 2024.

Thanks for any help.

As far as I know its 255, the total row length I think is limited by the page size.
