I need to swap some digital extensions on an sx-2000 light. One swap involves extensions with different devices - one is a SS410 and the other is a SS420. Another swap involves a DID and an internal extension. Is it possible to just do a move swap without deleting the extensions or devices? What's the best way to go about this?

DID and internal extension do not require port relocation and can be done by simply changing the extensions.

Port swaps of Like devices are fairly straight forward as long as you REMEMBER TO CHECK MESSAGE WAITING STATUS BEFOREHAND!!! in other words, make sure mwi is off.

For unlike device types you need to be a little more creative.

Create a temporary extension on a spare port matching one of your set types
Swap 1st extension with temp
Change temp set type to match 2nd extension
Swap 2nd extension with temp
Change temp extension to match 1st station again
Swap temp extension with 1st extension again
Delete temp extension

His 2nd sentence here being the operative statement. (IMO)

Failure to check (and clear) MWI beforehand will cause the tech support phone to ring.
After the mov/swap then reset MWI back to the state it was originally in (if it was on when you started)

MOV/SWAPs can also be performed via OPS MAN but even OPS isn't smart enough to capture and carry the MWI lamp status to the correct instrument.

Thanks for the step by step instructions and the tips! Unfortunately, we don't have OPS MAN. Do I need to check line appearances before any of the swaps? On a related note, are there any prerequisite steps I should be aware of when all I want to do is change device types on an extension, i.e., changing a 410 to a 420, etc.? Do I need to check for MWI, line appearances, etc.?

What I do is to change the set type 1st in the DNI form to match the phone with the most buttons.
(change the 410 to a 420)
Then swap A with B.
Then change the DNI form for the new ss410 port back to set type SS410.
This bypasses the need for a temp number and works even if you don't have spare ports.

BTW the command is "move swap <ext-A> with <ext-B>
