I have attached 2x USR modems (both new out of the box) to a Mitel SX-200 ICP MX. Neither unit will allow my laptop to connect. I have tried three computers and none of them work. It can't be the computers (3) and it can't be the modems (2). Any ideas?

The modems connect, but when I go to hit ENTER (4x) it does nothing.

Thanks

To start with, you will need a serial port crossover cable. The maintenance port of the 200_ICP is a DCE device which is expecting to communicate with a DTE device, i.e., a terminal or a PC with terminal emulation software running, such as ProComm. Since the modem is also a DCE device (same as the 200ICP) a crossover cable is required.

Modem settings will vary, but generally with USR Sportsters you'll set the switches (1~8) UP/UP/UP/DN/UP/UP/UP/DN.
The serial port baudrate on the modem needs to be 9600, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit (8/N/1).

Okay, I tried a fourth computer and it was able to connect. I tried the others again and they won't work. I don't understand what a old computer has over the new ones (3). All the settings (every last one) are identical.

what are you trying to do with the modems, use them as dial up or rem access?

I guess it would have helped if I said what I was trying to do. Some times we just assume. The modem is connected to the maintenance port for remote access.

How can you gain Rem Access to the 200icp when directly connected to the maintenace port you cant gain access to the web browser or even the sx 200 telnet.

you can only access the rtc card via the maintenace port.

what advantages would you gain?

The maintenance port is for "maintenance and programming." It can be used with a standard serial cable or modem. ADVANTAGES? Makinging software changes.

I am fairly confident that on the SX200 ICP the only ways for accessing CDE forms for programming changes is either through the maintenance port with a VT-100 Terminal emulation program or through the Secure Telnet program provided by Mitel.

I think that "ianuk1974" may have confused the 3300 ICP with the SX200 ICP (sorry dude!). You use a web browser for access to system programming and maintenance on the 3300 ICP. The maintenance port on the 3300 is for access to the RTC card on the 3300 ICP. You are not able to use a web browser to access anything on the SX200 ICP.

To gain access remotely to the SX200 ICP, you can do one of two things:

1)You can connect a modem to the maintenance port using a Cross-over (NULL MODEM) Serial cable because, as MitelInMyBlood member mentioned, both the modem and SX200 ICP maintenance port are DCE devices. This will allow you to use your VT-100 terminal program to dial the modem and have access to the maintenance port.

2) You can install a PC on the customer's site that you can access remotely with a program like PCanywhere. This would allow you to use the Secure Telnet program, as long as it is installed on the PC on customer site, to access the programming for changes.

Obviously option 2 is a fairly expensive option, hence the popularity of installing a modem.

You may want to check out Mitel On Line for two tech bulletins -: 04-5106-00013 and 05-5162-00039 or use the search feature in Technical Support/Knowledge Base and type in "modem".

I forgot to mention that the tech bulletins will describe how to physically set up the modem, right down to hard coding the modem to be set for 9600 baud, the pin outs on the cables and other options.

Hope it helps!
