I'm planning to set up a SX-200 LW17 to integrate with a Property management system. The voicemail (COVoice) will integrate also. THe integration scheme is using a dataset from the mitel to the PMS but the PMS is going to be over 50 ft from the PBX and voicemail. I suppose I could place the voicemail next the PMS away from the PBX and run a 4pr cable to the voicemail.

anyone have some ideas to extend the serial connection for the voicemail so I can keep the voicemail next to the PBX in the phone room. I've looked at a serial to ethernet conversion device but i'm not sure if it will work.

I know it's not "spec" but in a pinch I've successfully run RS232 at 9600 bps almost 100' using std. Cat-5. Barring this, find a catalog from an outfit by the name of BLACK BOX. They have RS232 short-haul modems that will run over a mile. Also check to see if you can find a couple old Mitel datasets. You can use a Dataset-1 together with a Dataset-2 and go the same distance (over 1 mile). The Dataset-1 and 2 will talk to each other directly, just like a pair of short-haul modems, with no need for a PBX inbetween. Ordinary house pairs will work fine up to (I think) as fast as 19,200 bps. Maybe call Dean Enterprises (1-800-451-2089) to see if they have any of these old datasets.

2 datasets back to back. neat. well this run is less than 100 feet and I have the RJ45-DB25 adapters and there is spare CAT5e in place. What is the pinout that you used? I've looked at short haul modems, a little pricey in my view.

I recall trying it both ways, paired & split.

Paired: WHite/Blu = TX Blu/White = Ground
Paired: White/Ora = RX Ora/White = Ground

Only used TX/RX and ground, no flow control

That's 2-3 & 7 on DB25 connector or 3-2 & 5 on a DB9

Back-to-back datasets will only work if one is a Dataset-1 and the other is a Dataset-2. These go back a ways in Mitel hardware history, late 1980's for sure. The secondary market/grey market shops should have them fairly cheap, guessing mebbe 50~75 bux apiece w/power cubes. They are bulletproof-reliable. I've used them for years for all kinds of extended-range RS232 applications, still have some in use today.

why not have a pms pc on the network with 5 com ports on
it in the pbx room .I have the the covoice ,a dataset for pms call actuator, call accounting to pms and a port for maintainace on the 200,and another data set for acd reports.
all on one box?
