Hi I just have a quick question for the best way to set my network up.

1) I have a one gigabit (lets call it A) switch for my server farm.

2) I have a two switches for my network. one 10/100 (B) and one gigabit (C).

I currently have a cable going from A to B. Then I have a cable going from B (via gigabit port) to C

I am not sure if this is the most efficient?

I was thinking running separate cables from A to both B and C.

well you have a 100mb bottle neck between A and C so yeah it would make better sense to cable A to B and A to C.

personally i agree I would have a cable running from:
A to C
A to B

If you're able vlan the 2 client switches to reduce broadcast between them.

Also look at your users and ensure the biggies are on te appropriate switch.

However any improvment will most likely on be theoretical rather than noticable to the end users!

Thanks for the advice guys. The switches do have the ability to do Vlan, but I am not sure what that is.

What kind of switches are these? Cisco? Dell? 3COM?

This question may be better answered in a switching forum. However, there are a few different configurations you could deploy depending on what type of switches and how manageable they are. Perhaps you could aggregate ports on the 10/100 to the GIG switch(s) using port channels. And, yes, defining your VLANs would certainly breakup your broadcast domains and isolate different types of traffic giving you more efficient use of throughput.

I hope you find this post helpful,

Think of Vlans like this, its the capability to make a big switch into several smaller switches.
