Does anyone have a definitive swear word list for a online filter I'm using ?

Alternatively, just swear at me and I'll jot them down !

Hi

Some time ago in another forum our conclusion for this question was that the best option is educating the users. While one can write "swe@r" or "$wear" or "S-W-E-A-R" or similar, filtering based on a word list is almost completely useless.

The problem with this is that you have to match whole words, otherwise, for example, "Scunthorpe" would get filtered because it contains the substring "cxxx".

You also have perfectly normal words, such as "cxxx" (male hen) which some lists contain. I came across this one (no pun intended) on as the list was far too restrictive. Also "txxx" (the birds) might get filtered out.

You also have multi languages to take into account (check out and many other factors.

As well as that, uses can easily modify characters (e.g. "sxxx", "w@nk", etc) or even just use "?", "*", or "!" to replace characters.

I guess it depends on how restrictive you want to be, and who your target audience is (very restrictive for kids, not so for adults).

I reckon if you match whole words only and have a big list that doesn't include words with "clean" meanings, that's a good start.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Hi

Oops, you asked this in the JavaScript forum ? Well, filtering on client side would not help too much. The user will only have to to take a look at your word list to find out what alternatives he/she can use to pass through the filter. Or even more simple, just disables the filter.

I am creating a proof reading system for online adverts and want to highlight words that look like they should be checked.

So I just want a list to get me started, and I'll update from there.

BTW - Scunthorpe is a fairly accurate description !

thought I'd try the Javascript forum - cos you all clever here !

Well, since someone will be offended by any one thing at one time or another, maybe you could link to this:

Depends what your goal is.

A swear words filter may indeed be "easily breakable", but it is not always useless.

Granted, if you are looking for a foolproof way to detect deliberate culprits - it is not the way.

It has proven to be a god-send to some people.

Occasionally people in the heat of the moment use a private discourse tone and don't consider the public issuance of their words. Remarks can be hasty or inadvertent and they would like to be saved from embarrassment.

Remarks can also be copied from private to a very public arena...

For example, when an IM text gets copied into a email with a wide distribution list, it may be best to tone it down.

Another example is a paging notification system that catches issues like this and avoids embarrassment if the text is logged/saved and viewable by many others even months later.

Such a system should allow for real words (such as the first name Shital) to be given a pass.

Some people have no fereaking use for a cruddy word replacer at all - but in other situations it is the cat's backside.

Dan, let me tell you something you already know...

Unless you're running some type of crazy animal forum or bird-watching extravaganza, you probably want to filter out "cxxx" and "txxx" (even if they are animals), as these are rarely used in regular conversations.

OK I have a 1276 bad words list I use for a forum (its a flat file, so you can extrapolate the data from it any way you want) - give an address and I'll send it on to you - OK?
