I would like to swap the old (IDE) DVD drive that came on my Acer Aspire 5002 WLMi laptop for a new HP/ LG GSA-T20L. Can anyone tell me if it's compatible and how do I remove my old DVD drive from my Acer? It's not obvious, like unscrew from underneath. Thank you.

you serious?

laptops aren't like desktop machines, inbuilt parts aren't interchangable. only thing you would be likely to swap over is the hard drive and that's not guaranteed being one may be sata and the other ide.

If the HP drive you've selected is also IDE, then theoretically is should work. However, the problem with CD and DVD drives these days is that whilst the basic drive itself will be the same shape, the facia plate for the tray may well be sculptured to fit the external contours of the laptop case. Also, HP CD/DVDs for example, sometimes have a different method of fixing the drive in the laptop.

Sometimes Acer machines have a simple slide button on the bottom of the case to release the CD/DVD. Often, the keyboard needs to be removed to reveal a single bolt holding the drive.

Thank you funkytunaa, GOAOZ and tf1.

@ funkytunaa - both PC and DVD are IDE, but the pins may not match up. I just don't know how to change them.

@ GOAOZ - There are slide releases underneath, but those are for the battery. I've unscrewed several thingies but it didn't allow the DVD drive to slide out. The new drive comes with 2 fascia plates, hopefully one will fit, otherwise I might be able to reuse the old one if the clips match up.

@ tf1 - I saw that post on fixya.com and emailed Anthon and he replied, "I could not revive the Acer, so it is still lying taken apart on the shelve behind my desk.." which made me continue searching.

A wise decision then!
