I have 2 hard drive on a Pentium III 450 PC. One is running W98 and the other is running W2000. W98 HDD is the primary hard drive. When I open up IE and run it for a few second it generates this error: "svhost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program." I loaded W2000 SP4 and it seemed to go fine. But now when I open up IE I still cont. to get the message, plus I cannot download any Windows updates or use their Knowledge base site. When I go to the site to search for the error msg. that I get, you usually have the option in the first block to click on the arrow and pick the Microsoft product to search for. When I click on the arrow it is completely blank. One other thing, I have been unable to download my McAfee virus software either. Any ideas?

My guess is that you have a virus or other malware.

If you have a browser other than IE installed, use that and follow the instructions in two FAQs:

. smah's online antivirus FAQ: faq760-3862
. a general malware removal guide/FAQ: faq608-4650

If you have no other browser installed, attempt through Control Panel, Add/Remove programs to Repair your IE installation.

Also, bring up Task Manager and kill any process (not svchost) that seems odd or suspicious, and try again to access IE.

Thank you for the helps. I did download Mozilla-a decidely better browser. I will try some of the fixes you suggested and post the results soon. Thanks so much for your replies. Don't know what I'd do without your help and this site

It was a virus. I updated Norton and ran a virus scan and it quarantined the virsu "w32.Randex.gen". I'm hoping that it didn't do any serious damage. The error I was getting seems to be the only problem. However, I plan to go back to Norton's website and review the cleaning procedures to make sure all is well. Thank you for the suggetions on downloading cwshredder, SpyBot, and AdAware. I do have the AdAware on my old drive, but plan to put these on the new drive as well. Thanks again!
