I have Windows XP Pro. My pc has been dragging off and on and sometimes the CPU usage shows 100% when going into email or the internet. Task Manager shows svchost.exe running 90% of my resources and I get hung up constantly. Sometimes, my pc will be fine, other times, it will be bogged down. I've read that svchost.exe is a needed app. I've also read that it can be a trojan or worm. How can I tell and how do I get it off my pc if it is?

Thanks in advance.

Post a HijackThis log and I will tell you.

Create a new folder.
Download HijackThis and unzip it to the new folder.

Run the application. Ask it to scan.
The scan button turns into a log button. Create a log and copy/paste it back to the forum.

Also: make sure you have this update installed:

bcastner-I really appreciate all this help!! I'm on the verge of wiping this computer and starting over, which of course, I really don't want to do.

Also, I meant to include that the problem happened this am the first 2 times I started my pc, on last restart, it seems fine at the moment.

And I keep losing my quick launch task bar. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. That just started happening the last few days.

Any svchost use is most likely to come from a Service entry. So let's look at yours:

O23 - Service: Ati HotKey Poller - ATI Technologies Inc. - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
OK
O23 - Service: AVG Anti-Spyware Guard - Anti-Malware Development a.s. - C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe
OK
O23 - Service: AVG7 Alert Manager Server (Avg7Alrt) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe
OK
O23 - Service: AVG7 Update Service (Avg7UpdSvc) - GRISOFT, s.r.o. - C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe
OK -- But watch this one. The Grisoft servers are incredibly busy at times.

O23 - Service: EvtEng - Intel Corporation - C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\EvtEng.exe
OK -- Seem my comment below.
O23 - Service: NICCONFIGSVC - Dell Inc. - C:\Program Files\Dell\NICCONFIGSVC\NICCONFIGSVC.exe
OK - See my comment below.
O23 - Service: Pml Driver HPZ12 - HP - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe
OK
O23 - Service: RegSrvc - Intel Corporation - C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\RegSrvc.exe
OK - See my comment below.
O23 - Service: Spectrum24 Event Monitor (S24EventMonitor) - Intel Corporation - C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\S24EvMon.exe
OK - See my comment below
O23 - Service: WLANKEEPER - Intel® Corporation - C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\Bin\WLKeeper.exe
OK - See my comment below
O23 - Service: Dell Wireless WLAN Tray Service (wltrysvc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\wltrysvc.exe
OK - See my comment below

My comment below: You have installed two different, non-coporating wireless service replacements for native XP Wireless Zero Service.

Pick on. Dell or Intel. Remove the other.
For a test for a little while, manually Update your Antivirus and Anti-spyware definitions. See if this helps to calm things down a bit.

Start, Run, services.msc
O23 - Service: AVG7 Update Service (Avg7UpdSvc)

Set the startup type to manual for the experiment.

If it makes no noticable difference after a reboot and test for a day or two, reset its startup type to Automatic.

I did not seen any nastie critters in your hjt log.
