svchost window appears quite frequently

my laptop gets lots of svchosts errors on opening up applications and slow in opening up as well, any help much aapreciated.

running xp pro, sp2, nec laptop.
 
Next time you have an error come up take a look in the event viewer.

Start > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer

In here will be a more detailed error message, let us have a couple of those and we should be able to help you better.

The svchost file does quite a lot and is a ligitimate process
However it has been a target for malware attacks in the past, are you running any antivirus and malware tools?

but am i right in saying svchost is perfectly safe and indeed vital for the workings of windows xp OS.
i am runing symantec corporate 7 anti virus edition.

As long as you keep your antivirus up to date and follow the general advice given by Bill in the FAQ he pointed you to then you should be ok.
