I have SuSE 8.0 Personal installed and working great on my system. However, for the work I do, I need to upgrade to the Professional version and just purchased SuSE 8.1 Professional for that purpose.

Question is, should I treat it as a 'new' ('clean') install and end up re-doing my configurations or would it work (correctly :-}) if I do an 'upgrade' from Personal 8.0 to Professional 8.1?

Thanks in advance for any information on the appropriate upgrade path.

Tom

(By the way, 8.0 was my first experience with SuSE - have always used Red Hat until 7.3 wouldn't install and their tech support spent the entire 30 days arguing about what my question was - then wanted me to pay for help. SuSE is a MUCH EASIER installation than Red Hat every thought of being!!!)

it should not be problems.anyhow if you have problems(like packages errors or unable to save config)use this boot options
ide=nodma apm=off
ide=nodma(you should do it with this one in case...)
apm=off acpi=off
acpi=oldboot
pci=acpi

For the record, I contacted SuSE in Germany and was told that it was far, far better to do a clean install of 8.1 Professional rather than try to update from 8.0 Personal. Seems that going the update route can/probably will cause problems in file structure, library versions, etc.

I've done the clean install of 8.1 Professional, spent a couple of evenings configuring it, and am absolutely delighted with the product.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SuSE 8.1 PROFESSIONAL - OR ***ANY*** SuSE PRODUCT - OVER Red Hat, Mandrake, etc. I've tried 'em all and SuSE is, by far, the easiest to install and configure and the most stable distribution I've ever used.
