SUS: GPO Installation of Client Update Service Fails ?

Hey folks...

Yet another SUS related question....

I am testing using GPO's to install the Client Update Service for SUS. I have followed the white paper, basicly just assigning the MSI to computers. For testing I have a new OU, GPO, a test user and PC running WinXP (clean no SP). The machine boots up and kicks off the install of the Update Service, and this is where it hangs. Just sitts there with the logon type message saying its installing. Only way out is to reboot. After reboot, the software appears in the Add/Remove programs however the associated update DLL's are not updated (does not actually install) and nothing is logged in the event log.

Any idea's on where to start or what the problem might be?

Many thanks all

Mike

I'm not positive about this, but doesn't WinXP have the Update Client installed from scratch? I'll have to do a little more research but our client has both Win2k and XP workstations and I think the XP workstations worked right out of the box, but the Win2k machines needed the Client or SP4 installed to function with SUS.

I may just as well be wrong, but what I have seen indicates that XP requires SP1 or you can install the update client if they are pre-SP1. As it turns out it should not be a major problem as we can push SP1 out using a GPO, just really not sure why this update client hangs if I try and push it out. Installs fine if I do it manually, but if its pushed using a GPO it hangs..

Ideally I would like to be able to push the client out, and use SUS to update a new XP client with SP1 and then all the updates required.

Thanks,

Mike
